THE MTB Marathon World Championship qualifying leg on Sept 28, which will serve as a high-stakes prelude to the Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (LIMBC).
Human Voyage Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Malik Mydin, whose company organises both the races, said he was happy to bring the event to Asia for the first time, but stressed that various factors need to be studied before Langkawi is ready to commit to the race on a long-term basis.
The six-stage LIMBC, which is already in its fourth edition this year, will be held on Sept 30-Oct 5. The six day race consists of various stages with technically challenging trails across a variety of terrains from idyllic beaches, through paddy fields and rubber plantations to mountainous rainforest. For the first time in the history of the competition is included a roller-coaster 90km marathon through Langkawi’s stunning GeoPark!
A total of 200 riders to compete in the one-day event. Besides Langkawi, the other qualifying legs are Villabassa (Italy), Sietterstrand (Denmark), Ucka (Croatia), Graz (Austria), Verbier (Switzerland), Jurmala (Latvia), Val Di Fassa (Italy), Obwalden (Switzerland), Ornans (France), Frejus (France) and Punchuncavi (Chile).
The first 20 finishers in each leg of the qualifiers, as well as the top 50 riders on the overall general classification, automatically qualify for the World Championship in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in June 2014.
A total of 10 professional teams have confirmed their entries for the LIMBC this year, a healthy improvement on the five teams that raced last season.
